Railways around the world are facing ever-increasing demands from booming passenger and freight transportation. Constructing new railways is not always possible due to the high cost and the lack of space. Virtual coupling (VC), which allows multiple trains to run cooperatively and closely on the same rail track, stands out as a major technological enabler for improving the existing railway network capacity and operation flexibility. However, the VC implementation in today’s railway systems faces significant challenges in terms of technology, operation, infrastructure, layout, deployment, and security.
In this talk, from a railway signalling and control perspective, I will provide an overview of railway VC. I will start this talk with a brief background on train signalling and control systems in railway industry. Next, I will introduce the VC concept and provide a brief review of emerging VC control techniques for railways. Then, leveraging my own research experience, several case studies on railway VC will be presented for demonstration and verification. Finally, potential future topics for achieving better VC control development and implementation will be briefly discussed.
